From the BBC Scotland's Adventure Show, Cameron McNeish introduces the TGO (The Great Outdoors) Challenge, the biggest backpacking event in the world. Every year over 300 walkers hike across Scotland from one of twelve starting points on the west coast to the east coast. Challengers are responsible for planning their own route, which is checked by experienced vetters. Routes can be high or low level or a mixture of both. This flexibility of chosen routes, combined with the large geographical area available, is one of the unique features of the Challenge and has made it a must-do event for backpackers from all corners of the world. One of the UK's best known mountain commentators, Cameron McNeish, met up with some of the Challengers during the 2008 event and discovered that this is no ordinary endurance event but a hugely social affair with a sense of camaraderie that is second to none, all in the context of Scotland's magnificent highland landscape-an incredibly successful mixture of outdoors experience! Cameron McNeish was editor of TGO Magazine and is a well known author and broadcaster. He is a regular contributor to BBC Scotland's Adventure Show and his other television credits include 'The Edge - 100 Years of Scottish Mountaineering' and two series of 'Wilderness Walks' for BBC2. Approx running time = 50 mins.
